10 Tips for Detailing Your Car

Warmer days are here again which means it is time to do a little spring cleaning with your car.  Routinely cleaning, washing, and waxing your car protect it from the elements and help it hold onto its resale value.   This is maintenance you can definitely do yourself and you don’t even need to leave your driveway.   It may be a good idea, though, to drive over to the local car wash and use their high power vacuum if your floors are particularly dirty or sandy.

This protects the carpet in your car but also protects your household vacuum.  With a little elbow grease and an afternoon, you can have your car looking spic and span in no time.  Here are
10 tips to help you along the way.

  1. Do Windows - Start by giving all the windows a thorough washing both inside and out.  Use streak free cleaner to remove all the dust, dirt, fingerprints, and other residue that can make it impossible to see through your windshield at night.
  2. Dashboard, Et Al - Using cleaner specifically made to clean the hard surfaces of your car, go to town cleaning your dashboard, center console, steering wheel, and any other non-fabric, non-carpet, non-leather surface in your car.
  3. Don’t Miss This - Before you finish up with the surface cleaner, go back and check the most used but often forgotten areas like the door handles, cup holders, and seatbelts. They need a wipe down too!
  4. Fresh Filter - Consider changing the cabin filter in your car to ensure you have excellent interior air quality, no matter how many summers your car has seen.  A new filter can also help reduce the affect of any allergens on your occupants.
  5. Go to the Mat - Get ready to vacuum by pulling out all four floor mats, removing any belongings from the floors and tossing any trash lurking under the front seats into the trashcan.  If the mats need cleaning, vacuum and then use the spot remover and scrub brush used to clean the carpets.
  6. Vacuum Like You Mean It - No skipping the cracks, crevices, and tough spots this time.  Use a high-power vacuum to go over all the carpeting, seats, and even the ceiling of the car.  This cleans up dirt but can also suck up stray pollen that may it past the filter.  There are very few things that will make your car look and feel newer than really clean carpets.
  7. Clean the Carpet - If required, use stain or spot remover to clean up any stains on the carpet or upholstery.  The rules of carpet cleaning apply as much to the carpet in your car as they do to the carpet in your house.  Do a spot test first to make sure there isn’t any bad reaction.
  8. Wash It - Use the hose from the car wash down the street or your front yard to wash the car starting at the roof.  This helps you get the most cleaning and rinsing power for the amount of water used.  You will need a cleanser made specifically for washing cars and a high power hose.
  9. Down Under - Once you are done washing it, go over the undercarriage and the wheels one more time.  Rust and dirt can hide under there and cause unseen damage.
  10. Check Your Work - Once you are done washing and the car is ready to drive, inspect it for nicks, scrapes in the paint, dings, and other damage and get them repaired right away.  If the nick is small enough, you can purchase a small car repair kit to take care of the dent.  Otherwise, you may need to take it to your local shop.
