Here’s what you need to know if you are looking for brake repair!
How often do brakes need replaced?
The length of time between brake pad replacements varies based on the quality of the brakes that are on your car and the conditions in which you drive your car. Most brake pads last between 30,000 to 70,000 miles. We sometimes hear stories of brakes lasting as little as 5,000 miles or as much as 100,000 miles, but those are anomalies.
If you have low quality brakes or brake pads, and/or if you drive in a lot of stop and go traffic, you will need to replace them more often than if you have high quality brakes and or/drive a lot of highway miles (long distances without braking.)
How much does a brake replacement cost?
- It depends on the year, make, and model of your car, the condition of your brakes and the quality of parts that you are going to use. However, in the Tempe, Scottsdale and Mesa area you can expect to pay $200 and $400 per axle for brake pad replacement with rotor surfacing.
What you need to know before you purchase brakes
- You get what you pay for: Many brake shops advertise super low-cost brake repair. These prices can be highly misleading and unrealistic depending on the year, make, model and condition of the brakes on your vehicle. The problem is that if you take your car in for $99 brakes you can leave there for $800, which is the average ticket at some of the “brakes only” type repair shops. Here’s the reality: no one leaves with a $99 brake job for four wheels. It’s either a heavy bait and switch or a flat garbage brake repair job.
- Super low cost brake jobs usually mean they are using low quality parts and inexperienced technicians. This can result in squeaks and grinds and poor stopping quality, which is exactly what you were trying to get rid of in the first place.
- Hire a reputable auto repair shop: Before you hire a shop to perform brake repair check out their reviews on the Better Business Bureau. Ask friends and family who they recommend.
